In Depth — For the Curious
The One Kriya Without Initiation
Most kriyas are guarded carefully: they demand initiation, a consecrated space, a trained teacher. Isha Kriya is the deliberate exception. Sadhguru created it so that anyone, anywhere, could receive a genuine spiritual process free of charge — “rooted in the timeless wisdom of the yogic sciences.” “Isha” means the source of creation; “kriya” means an internal action. The practice needs fifteen minutes of your day and no prior preparation.
Its power comes from its anchor: a simple, repeatable truth. “I am not the body, I am not even the mind.” Breath, thought, and awareness are woven into one process so that this understanding is not merely read or believed — it is experienced, a little more every day.
The three components
Isha Kriya works through three accessible levers. First, the breath: certain ways of breathing have the capacity to settle the system. Second, thought: the instruction “I am not the body, I am not even the mind” is not affirmation but discrimination — repeated until it moves from concept to lived experience. Third, awareness: a gentle orientation of attention toward the life that you are, apart from the physical and mental layers you carry.
“This is the simplest way for a human being to break the traps of his own physicality and mind.”
The Manipuraka sound
At the center of the practice sits a specific sound — the “Aaa” uttered from just below the navel, the center called Manipuraka, where the 72,000 nadis of the energetic body meet and redistribute. This one reverberation spreads across the whole body and is associated with health and dynamism. In Isha Kriya it is not a mantra to be chanted endlessly, but a precise vibrational support for the process.
The mandala commitment
The tradition is honest about what creates transformation: not intensity, but consistency. Isha Kriya comes with the recommendation of a 40-day mandala — a committed daily cycle during which the practice roots itself into the system. Practiced twice a day for 48 days, or once daily for 90, it is designed to become a natural part of how you function rather than an effort you make.
Who it has reached
Millions of people have learned Isha Kriya worldwide — one of the most widely shared guided processes Sadhguru has offered. For the genuinely curious, it is the lowest possible threshold into a real practice: free, guided by Sadhguru himself, requiring nothing but a chair or a cushion.
